This morning there were several Grasshopper sparrows singing from the orchards along National Fruit Rd off of Goldmiller Rd in Berkeley Co., WV. In addition there were many Vesper, Field and a few Savannah sparrows. A lone Northern Bob-white was calling from the top of the ridge.
This is great habitat for grassland birds. However, they were spraying the heck out of it this morning. It is depressing to see these rapidly declining species tied to a habitat that "requires" so much "management." I have to wonder what their chances are of raising reproductively viable offspring.
